Recent high winds have contributed to several area wildfires including one that briefly threatened a home Wednesday afternoon in the Forgotten Forest Subdivision west of New Waverly. Reports of a power outage in the area were followed by the discovery of a large wildfire that had ignited when a tree came into contact with power lines. New Waverly Firefighters responded to the original 911 call and after they arrived they requested assistance from US Forest Service Wildland crews assigned to the Sam Houston National Forest. Working together, they utilized hand tools and heavy equipment to build containment lines around the fire and mopped up hot spots within its perimeter. While no homes were damaged by this wildfire, conditions will continue to be favorable for wildfire breakouts until our spring green- up begins a few weeks from now.
As our weather warms, many local residents will take to the outdoors to begin their spring cleaning around their homes and yards, and now is a good time to look at how to reduce your wildfire risk.
