Several dozen homes were flooded in heavy rain storms in 2016 in Montgomery County. The county is planning to complete the final buyout of some of the flood properties to get them out of the flood plain.
Through the county’s six federally funded programs by way of FEMA and HUD, sixty homes have been bought and demolished now.
Executive Director of the county Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Jason Millsaps, said that the goal this year is to purchase at least 38 homes with a goal of hitting 50 by the end of 2023.
He said the 50 that are planned will finish out the grants. He said it’s a voluntary program, and there is no mandatory rule for the homeowner to sell out.
He also reported that, “Fourteen million of the $67 million allocated has been spent on buyouts.”
