At this week’s Huntsville City Council session, Emergency Management Coordinator for the City, Adam Winningham, addressed councilmembers as he narrated a slide presentation on the winter storm that spread through Huntsville and Walker County in February.
He said they set up the Emergency Operations Center at 6 PM on Sunday, February 14th . . . .
Transportation for those needing it and a check on local fuel availability ensued . . . .
Mr. Winningham commented more on tracking issues during the storm . . . .
They opened up the Storm Shelter and Library as warming centers during the severe winter freeze. Major Streets were treated for ice accumulation by the Streets Department. The City also allowed water customers to dispute charges for water because of pipe breaks in the City water system. There was about $80,000 in damage to City facilities, which will be covered by insurance, with a $2,500 deductible. What occurred during the ice storm in February will act as a guide for city officials on what to do in future similar weather situations in the City.
