SHSU Political Science Professor Mike Yawn has informed us that the LEAP Center—LEAP stands for Law, Engagement And Politics–is doing a nine-day trip of civil rights and other educational sites across five states. The Civil Rights component of this is primarily a recognition of the inauguration of Kamala Harris being the first female and first person of color as VP. They left yesterday (Tuesday), with this itinerary:
- Jan 12: Marshall and Caddo Lake (boat tour of Caddo Lake)
- Jan 13: Vicksburg and Jackson, MS (Civil War Battlefield, Jackson Museum of Civil Rights, Medgar Evers home; State Capitol)
- Jan 14: New Orleans (Homer Plessy grave, New Orleans Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, WWII Museum, Louis Armstrong Park)
- Jan 15: Biloxi, MS and Mobile, AL (Ohr-Okeefe Museum, Walter Anderson Museum)
- Jan 16: Montgomery, AL (MLK Church, State Capitol, MLK Home, Rosa Parks bus stop)
- Jan 17: Birmingham, AL (Jail site where MLK wrote his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail. The Vulcan, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Birmingham Museum of Arts)
- Jan 18 (MLK Day): Memphis, TN (Lorraine Motel, where MLK was assassinated)
- Jan 19: Little Rock (Little Rock Central High, MacArthur Museum, State Capitol)
- Jan 20: Trip Home (Watch Inauguration, and either Melrose Plantation or Hot Springs Natl Park)
