Benefit Fund-raiser Steak Dinner & Auction
The HISD Buyers Group will host a benefit fund-raiser steak dinner & auction beginning at 6:30pm Feb. 25. The group annually pools its members’ resources to purchase projects and auction animals at the Walker County Fair. Tickets for the dinner are $35 each – or $200 for a table of 6.

Free Income Tax Preparation
Free income tax preparation is available through April 16. Most taxpayers are eligible to use this free service – you do not have to be a specific age or in a specific income bracket. This service is provided by volunteers and is endorsed by the Internal Revenue Service. The tax preparation is available from 9am to 1pm Mondays & Wednesdays at 1st Baptist Church in Huntsville. Please use the entrance on 13th Street.

Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce “Trade Expo & Taste of Huntsville”
The Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce will host its 25th annual “Trade Expo & Taste of Huntsville” from 4-8pm March 1. Exhibitor booth spaces begin at $175. Sponsorships are also available. The event will take place at the Walker County Fairgrounds on Highway 30 West.

Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s annual “Walker County Night”
The Huntsville Area Go-Texan committee has tickets available for the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s annual “Walker County Night.” This year’s night for Walker County is set for March 9 and will feature country superstar Reba McEntire as the entertainment. The night will also be part of “Paint the Rodeo Pink Day” in support of breast cancer awareness. Locally available tickets may be purchased – while they last – for $24 each.

Walker County Fair Association’s 2012 “Country Music Star”
Auditions are set for 10am March 10 & 17 for the Walker County Fair Association’s 2012 “Country Music Star” competition. Awards include cash, prizes and a professionally recorded single. Each participant must be a Walker County resident or attend school in Walker County. No bands – this is a competition for individuals & duos only. Contestants will be judged on vocal talent, stage presence and showmanship. The finals will take place April 7.

Lady Hornets in Training
The HHS Lady Hornet softball program is offering a program called “Lady Hornets in Training.” The program – which is designed for all ages up to the 8th grade – features coaches working with players on throwing, hitting, fielding and base-running. Participants receive 1 hour of instruction each Saturday beginning March 10 and going through the end of the Lady Hornets’ regular-season spring schedule. Cost is $50 per person. Registration forms are available at all HISD campuses and at the high school athletics office. Registration forms and payment must be received before participants are eligible for the program.

“Deep Spaces” Exhibit
The Sam Houston Memorial Museum – in conjunction with the Tall Pines Quilt Guild – is hosting an exhibit featuring textiles, and a mixed-media exhibit called “Deep Spaces.” The exhibits are on display from through March 11 at the museum on South Sam Houston Avenue in Huntsville.

25th Annual “Let’s Talk”

Girl Scout Parade
The Girl Scouts of the San Jacinto Council in Huntsville will host a “Girl Scout Parade” to help celebrate 100 years of scouting. The parade is set for March 24, and will begin at the 1st United Methodist Church in downtown Huntsville, and will conclude at the Girl Scout House on Avenue ‘M’ near its intersection with 22nd Street. All current scouts – and all scout alumni – are invited to be part of this historical event.

Walker County Fair & Rodeo Barbecue & Chili Cook-off
Entries are currently being accepted for the annual Walker County Fair & Rodeo Barbecue & Chili Cook-off. The event is set for April 6 & 7 at the fairgrounds. Categories to be judged include brisket, ribs, chicken, chili, pulled pork, desserts, jackpot beans and a mystery category. Entry fee is $100 for the 1st meat category, and $10 for each additional meat.
